The Flare Light Source Setup: Realistic Sunlight Simulation in the Laboratory

Modern automotive cameras and camera systems for safety-critical applications must deliver reliable image information even under extreme lighting conditions. Direct sunlight or intense directional light sources can cause sensor saturation, lens flare, packaging flare and stray light effects that significantly affect image quality and the evaluation of camera-based systems. For reproducible measurements according to international standards such as IEEE 2020-2024, IEC 62676 and ISO 16505:2015, a powerful, precisely adjustable and collimated light source is required to generate these effects under controlled laboratory conditions.

The Flare Light Source Setup from lightsource.tech combines the LS-WL1 high-brightness light source with a specially designed low-stray-light collimator. The system achieves illuminance levels of over 100,000 lux at the camera position, enabling realistic simulation of direct sunlight under controlled test conditions. Thanks to its precisely adjustable intensity, both saturation effects in modern automotive HDR cameras and reduced, non-saturating test scenarios can be investigated. The large 50 mm aperture enables application-oriented test setups for evaluating flare and stray light effects in automotive cameras, camera-monitor systems and other camera-based safety applications.

With its large 50 mm aperture, the system is also suitable for cameras with larger entrance pupils or front lenses. An illuminance of over 100,000 lux at the camera position enables tests up to the saturation range of modern HDR cameras.

The light intensity can be precisely adapted to the specific measurement task — from maximum sunlight simulation to reduced, controlled flare scenarios. This allows the setup to be flexibly integrated into test setups according to IEEE 2020-2024, IEC 62676 and ISO 16505:2015.
