What is a liquid light guide (LLG)?
Liquid light guides are light guides that work with a liquid that is surrounded by a transparent tube. The liquid has a higher refractive index than the cladding, so that the light is reflected back into the liquid by total internal reflection and can only emerge at the end of the liquid light guide. Liquid light guides can transmit light with lower losses than glass fiber bundles and are significantly more flexible. They are often used in microscopy and medical technology.
How does a liquid light guide work?
The liquid in the light guide has a higher refractive index than its transparent tube surrounding it, so that the light is reflected back into the liquid by total internal reflection and can only emerge again at the end of the liquid light guide.
What are liquid light guides used for?
Liquid light guides are very flexible and show low losses. They are often used in microscopy and medical technology.
